10 keywords, 5 habit apps: what actually ranks

Habit tracking is the canonical indie category: small teams, subscription pricing, and discovery that lives or dies on App Store search. So we measured it. Five habit apps spanning the full size range — from 766,051 ratings down to 2,494 — against the 10 keywords a habit app most wants to own. The results dismantle the two things everyone believes about search: that ratings decide rankings, and that the head term is the prize.

Finding 1: The app named after the category wins the category

InnerGrow's app is called, simply, Habit Tracker — and it is #1 for 8 of the 10 keywords, including ones its name doesn't literally contain ("daily habits", "habit journal", "habit planner"). The name supplies the two highest-value words in the category, Apple's index combines them into every phrase in the cluster, and 148,113 ratings of gravity do the rest. This is the single strongest pattern in the data, and it repeats at every scale of the App Store: exact-name relevance first, popularity second.

Finding 2: The biggest app is invisible on most terms

Finch has 766,051 ratings — 5.2× the category leader's count and the best average (4.95★) of the five. It ranks #1 for nothing and is absent from the top 200 on 6 of 10 keywords, including "habits" and "daily habits". Finch's name and metadata speak "self-care pet", not "habit tracker", so for habit queries it isn't a weak competitor — it isn't a competitor at all. Ratings gravity only sorts apps that relevance has already admitted. If your metadata doesn't claim a term, your install base is a rumor as far as that term is concerned.

Finding 3: A 2,494-rating indie holds #2 on the head term

HabitKit — one indie developer, 2,494 ratings — sits at #2 for "habit tracker", #4 for "habits", #8 for "atomic habits" and #13 for "streak tracker". Its name, "Habit Tracker - HabitKit", leads with the exact category phrase and lets the brand ride behind it. It is out-rated roughly 307-to-1 by Finch, the app sitting two places below it on the head term, and beats it anyway. For a small app, this is the whole playbook in one row: you cannot win the ratings war this year, but the name war is decided the day you submit your metadata.

Finding 4: Phrasing whiplash is real and huge

Same apps, same day, adjacent phrasings — wildly different outcomes. Atoms is #2 for "habit builder" and #106 for "daily habits". HabitKit is #2 for "habit tracker" and #165 for "daily habits". Productive is top-10 on six keywords and #54 on "streak tracker". There is no such thing as "our ASO is good"; there is only "our ASO is good for these exact strings". Any strategy that doesn't start from a per-keyword rank table is astrology.

Finding 5: Most top-10s in this category are soft

For each keyword, here is the weakest app currently holding a top-10 slot — the floor a new entrant has to beat:

Nine of the ten keywords have at least one top-10 slot held by an app with under 1,000 ratings; five have a slot held by an app with zero. Two honest caveats. First, some of those 0-rating occupants are brand-new apps Apple is test-surfacing, and their slots churn — which cuts both ways: the floor is low, and it moves. Second, the head term is the exception that proves the rule: "habit tracker" itself is the one fully defended keyword, with a 2,494-rating floor and an exact-name #1. The attackable surface in this category is the ring around the head term — "streak tracker", "habit journal", "habit builder", "daily habits" — where exact-match metadata plus a few hundred ratings is a realistic top-10 ticket.

How to use this: for each keyword you're considering, find the weakest top-10 incumbent's ratings count. If it's under ~1,000 and your name/subtitle/keyword field carries the phrase, that keyword is a fair fight this quarter. If the floor is five figures and the top is an exact-name incumbent, queue it for next year and take the soft term first.

Method. Subjects were five habit apps chosen from the top of the "habit tracker" results to span the category's size range (766,051 to 2,494 ratings). Ranks and ratings were pulled live from Apple's public iTunes Search API on October 21, 2026, US storefront; rank is the 1-based position among up to 200 returned results. Ratings counts are as reported by the API that day and drift daily. "Weakest top-10 incumbent" is the top-10 app with the lowest ratings count for that keyword. Ranks are snapshots and fluctuate; the patterns here (name gravity, relevance gating, sub-1,000 floors) are structural, but any single position should be re-checked before acting on it.
