BeReal: nine ratings to number one — then the long settle

An app’s title and subtitle are the most honest strategy document it ever publishes: 50-odd characters that say exactly which searches it wants to win. BeReal launched on the App Store on 8 January 2020. We pulled its archived App Store pages from 2021 to this month and read that document at seven points in its life. For three and a half years the document refused to sell anything — brand name, plus a negation. Then, in August 2024, it finally started courting search — and today it holds #1 for the very phrases it spent years ignoring.

Before the story — what this data is, and isn’t

Historical keyword ranks aren’t public data. Apple has never published them, so no tool can show BeReal’s rank in 2022. The Wayback Machine holds the listing itself: each card quotes the App Store page as captured and links the snapshot, with titles and subtitles transcribed exactly and ratings as displayed.

BeReal launched on 8 January 2020; the captures used here begin in February 2021, and a snapshot shows the listing on that date, not when a change was made. Each card’s icon is the asset that snapshot’s page referenced; every capture preserved one, so every card carries its era’s icon. Where we read strategy into a title, we label it as interpretation. The closing ranks are today’s, measured with Apple’s search API, US storefront, on 25 October 2026: rank is position among up to 200 results, “—” means the app wasn’t in them, and ranks fluctuate.

Seller: BeReal. Description opened: “BeReal is the first Uncontrollable network to share once a day your authentic moments in Photo with your Friends. Everyday at a random time, everyone has to capture a Photo in 2 minutes.”

Keyword focus

The title courts nothing generic: brand name, plus a negation. The subtitle tells you what the app isn’t. Our read: a tiny app — 9 ratings on the page — selling a stance, not a search term. The whole pitch is “we are not Instagram.”

Description opened: “BeReal is the simplest photo sharing app to share once a day your real life in photo with friends. Everyday at a different time, everyone captures a photo within 2 minutes.”

Keyword focus

The words softened — “simplest photo sharing app” — but the title still courts zero generic searches, and the page shows #10 in Social Networking. Our read: 9 ratings became 12,700 in fourteen months on word of mouth alone. Nothing in this listing explains that growth, which is the point — the listing wasn’t doing it.

Description unchanged from April. The page shows #1 in Social Networking.

Keyword focus

Unchanged — same title, same subtitle — while the ratings count grew nearly twenty-fold since April. Apple would name BeReal iPhone App of the Year two months later. Our read: this is the cultural moment, not the listing. A title containing no generic keyword cannot explain a 20× jump; the wave carried it.

Description unchanged. The page shows #11 in Social Networking.

Keyword focus

Still unchanged — while the ratings count nearly tripled since September 2022 and the category rank fell out of the top 10. Our read: rank is relative. BeReal’s count grew; everyone else’s grew faster. A listing with no keywords to defend has nothing to catch the fall with.

Keyword focus

A million ratings — and the category rank keeps sliding, from #11 to #40 in a year. Our read: the settle, in one number. The wave is over, the count keeps compounding, and the listing still says nothing searchable.

Description opened: “Hey there! Welcome to BeReal, the app designed to bring authenticity back to social media.” The page shows #28 in Social Networking.

Keyword focus

The first title in four and a half years with generic words in it: “photos”, “friends”, “daily”. The negation is gone; the subtitle keeps the authenticity claim — “real photo”, “no filter” — while the title finally does search work. Our read: the work it skipped in 2022, done in 2024. The category rank improved from #40 to #28 in the same move.

Description opened: “Two minutes. Real friends, real moments. Download BeReal and join the social network that’s not trying to be one.” The page carries an Editors’ Choice badge.

Keyword focus

The subtitle softens — from a filter claim to a moments claim — while the title holds. Our read: the 2024 title did its job, so the subtitle no longer has to carry the whole authenticity argument. Even the description now winks at the old negation: “the social network that’s not trying to be one.”

And the ranks for the phrases this listing has spent five years rotating through its title and subtitle — measured, not remembered:

bereal#1
friends daily#1
real photo#1
daily photo#2
photo sharing#8
social network#88
Keyword focus

The generic phrases it ignored for years are now won — and the one phrase it disavowed, “social network”, sits at #88. Our read: the 2024 rename paid off in exactly the terms it targeted. The listing finally courts search, and search answers.

The other graph: ratings gravity

While the words refused to move, one number only moved in one direction — until you look at what it was measured against. These are the ratings totals printed on the archived pages above.

From 9 ratings to 1.2 million — with the twenty-fold jump between April and September 2022 doing most of the work. Note the shape after 2022: the count keeps climbing while the category rank falls. Ratings compound; rank is relative.

The rename finally courted search

For three and a half years, BeReal’s listing was a statement of identity, not a search document. The brand, plus a negation, plus a description that explained the ritual. That works while the ritual is the news — and the numbers prove it worked, for a while, spectacularly. But a statement of identity gives Apple’s search nothing to match a stranger’s query against, and when the news cycle moved on, the listing had no second engine. The category rank slid from #1 to #40 while the ratings count marched from 247,100 to a million.

The August 2024 rename is the second engine arriving late: three generic words in the title, the authenticity claim compressed into the subtitle. It did not restore #1 in the category — the settle is real, and no title change undoes a cooled moment. What it did was narrower and more durable: it gave the app searchable phrases of its own. Today’s table is the receipt. “Friends daily” and “real photo” at #1, “daily photo” at #2, “photo sharing” at #8 — every one of them a phrase the pre-2024 title never contained. And “social network” at #88, the category the app spent its youth disavowing, still unowned. The listing finally courts search, on the terms the product actually delivers.
